Well another day at the vulture diner !!! even more today we have 60+ in the air along with many ravens its quite a sight. The Hooded Crows are still keeping distant though.
Later a juvenile Bearded Vulture showed up and itself returned later , it passed over four times in all, landed once 1km away but even there the ravens saw it off and it overflew again giving great views. Hopefully it will come back in the evening or tomorrow morning for the remains.......
Another month draws to a close, hopefully september will open the way August is closing and will also bring many more migrants
Sorry but all images are again on facebook. Please join, the pictures also look a lot better on there as I do not have to reduce them !

The Griffon Vultures return for a second sitting today giving us some excellent close views as they flew only a few metres above us and the house. They flew in from the north very low to the ground and rather frighteningly headed fast on the wind towards us. Great to see and experience these majestic flyers coming in so close skilfully avoiding us and the house.
Later a Black kite appeared but was seen off by the ravens, which appear to be guarding the carcass and bullying everything off site.
Again due to a problem images are on Facebook....

20 Grey and 1 Purple Heron spotted low over the bay , eventually landed for a short while on the rocks at the end of the port.
What a wonderful few moments ! The whole flock of 20 greys have now landed on the rocks at the end of the port. They came in , split into two groups and one group landed as the other circled off the point. The second group came in and landed in ones and twos, until we had 19 onshore. One continued to go over their heads making several attempts to get down. It continued to fly up and down and out into the bay, dropping its legs to where shallower water could be seen by us but obviously too deep for the bird, twice it looked like it would come down in the water. Several minutes had now gone by , was this bird trying to get the others back in the air or just inexperienced. Two birds lifted off and headed out into the bay as the lone bird headed further out , the first of the two joined and turned the loner, guiding it back, the other of the " helpers" turned and took the lead. With the loner now in the middle they ushered it back , the lead bird landed, with the main bunch and our bird then made a successful landing alongside a single heron right on the end of the point. The other helper just dropped straight into the pack. Job done, all safely resting until the next phase of their journey south. Adults helping and showing juveniles the way, very nice to watch. Now that's birding !
Later a group of 35 Honey Buzzard circled over the house caught a thermal and were away SE. Without checking records I think this is the largest group we have seen from this location. But beaten again, check out the numbers seen at Antikythira !! ... http://blogs.ornithologiki.gr/osa/?p=3968

Over Afrata

A short while later higher in the sky

When we first came here in 2001 the area shown below was a small wetland, uncultivated and with a good selection of waders. We have watched as all sorts of rubbish, some even looking toxic !!! has been dumped and the area then covered with several centimetres of so called topsoil. With EU encouragement the farmers are now growing crops to sell on to us unsuspecting consumers. The area in top photo right of pole and the area where tractor and plastic is being laid is one length and has only recently been levelled on top of a metre of yuk. I wonder what will grow there it will certainly be genetically modified !!
